Product Description

Details

This is a fabulous walk, visiting two major cities of the North – Hull & York and incorporates 2 of England’s finest churches, that of York and Beverley Minster. This 60 mile linear trail was devised to commemorate the bicentenary of the 1807 act of parliament abolishing British involvement in the transatlantic slave trade. The abolition of the slave trade was in large part due to William Wilberforce and his fellow abolitionists and the culmination of years of campaigning and hard work to bring this obscene trade to an end. The trail starts in Hull, where Wilberforce was born and subsequently went on to represent in parliament as MP. On to Pocklington where Wilberforce went to school and finishes in York, where again he was elected MP for Yorkshire. The trail can be divided up into 13 separate day walks, all visiting locations of importance in the struggle for human freedom and dignity. Each of the places of interest offers at least one place of Christian worship, so therefore this walk can be used as a pilgrimage walk.

The walk starts off in the town of Hull and a day is put aside to take in the many sights and sounds of this great town or more importantly to undertake an introduction to the life and work of William Wilberforce, with a stop at the museum dedicated to his life and the abolition of slavery. A must do activity is to undertake ‘Walking with Wilberforce’ – a heritage trail through Hull Old Town, if you are to get a clearer picture of the man and his work.

This walk is highly recommended to people of all faiths with an interest in the slave trade and its present day implications – there is still work to do....
